Dental care includes not only treatment of existing problems but also prevention, in the form of regular examinations and cleanings. General and family dentistry emphasizes the value of maintaining a state of dental wellness through all phases of life, from childhood through the senior years. Here at Prestige Dental General & Cosmetic Dentistry, we provide this all-important care in a friendly, relaxing, state-of-the-art environment.
Our family dentist, Dr. Rubenstein, schedules twice-yearly examinations and cleanings as a smart way to ensure optimal dental care. The examination typically begins with a comprehensive set of oral x-rays to reveal any problems in the teeth and surrounding bone. Manual examination of the teeth and gums are another important part of this process. The hygienist (or in some cases, the family dentist himself) will use a dental pick and oral mirror to see and feel the presence of cavities or other breaches of the tooth enamel. We also check the periodontal pockets (the tiny gaps between the tooth enamel and the surrounding gum tissue) and check for signs gum disease. Palpating the head and neck can alert us to the presence of a glandular issue or temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ). If we do detect a problem, we can arrange for prompt treatment in a future appointment with the patient.
Once we have completed the examination, we can proceed to a professional cleaning of the teeth and gums. While brushing and flossing at home is certainly necessary to remove food particles and prevent dental diseases, no amount of home care can remove all of the plaque that builds up, especially in hard-to-reach area between teeth or underneath the gum line. This is an important part of preventive dental care, because plaque can harden into tartar, attracting bacteria that can cause tooth loss and infections.
Aside from these basic procedures, our Sarasota clinic addresses the special dentistry issues of different age groups. Teenagers, for instance, may need braces or other orthodontic treatment to ensure that they will enjoy straight teeth in adulthood. (Adults may need or want this procedure too.) We can install the necessary hardware and make tiny adjustments as needed until the teeth have straightened. Older patients may come to us with damaged or missing teeth due to previous oral disease or injury, in which case we can build and install functional, realistic-looking restorations such as caps, crowns, bridges, implants or full dentures. These restorations are not just cosmetic -- they also improve chewing and speech.
We urge Sarasota residents seeking a lifetime of dental health for their loved ones to contact our clinic today for more information or to schedule an appointment. From regular x-rays and cleanings to braces or other orthodontic work, our family dentist is ready, willing and able to help people of all ages enjoy healthy teeth and gums for many years to come.
