Dental Implants: Benefits, Advantages, and What to Expect with Our Sarasota Dentist

Despite many improvements in oral health, awareness of the importance of dental hygiene, and advancements in dental technologies, all too many people will lose at least one tooth during their lifetime. In some cases, they may lose far more than just one tooth. This is usually due to tooth decay, abscess, mouth injury, jaw injury or periodontal disease.

For many years, the only options when a tooth became compromised were to pull the tooth and leave a gap, get a root canal and crown or install a bridge to fill the gap. Now, there is an additional innovative, more natural and more permanent option for those who suffer tooth loss: a dental implant.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is essentially a replacement root for a lost tooth. The installation of a dental implant allows an abutment and then a crown to be placed on it to help simulate a new tooth in a much more realistic and long-lasting way than other solutions.

As the dental implant heals in place and fuses with the jawbone, the dental implant forms a solid and secure foundation for a realistic looking tooth replacement effect. The replacement crown can be affixed permanently, but it can also be made removable if the client prefers.

Benefits and Advantages of Dental Implants

Dental implants have a high success rate of around 98%. With proper care, they can in many cases last a lifetime. Just about any adult can be a candidate for dental implants provided the jawbone area is deemed receptive for it and they have not had any major health issues that could cause risk factors.

What are some of the other benefits and advantages of this type of tooth replacement solution versus others? They include:

  • A More Natural Look and Feel. A dental implant looks as well as feels like a real tooth. The upper part can be matched to look like the rest of your teeth and blend in with their color and shape. However, dental implants also feel better than a root canal or bridge, as the implant is the same basic shape as your natural tooth.
  • Higher Chance of Being Permanent. While to tooth replacement solution can be guaranteed permanent, dental implants are installed using surgical methods and fuse with the bone of your jaw. As they settle in over time, they take on the character of a real tooth.
  • More Comfortable Than Other Options. Bridges and dentures can feel uncomfortable in the mouth, and many say that their root canals never feel quite “right” after they receive them. With a dental implant, comfort and even the ability to eat naturally and speak clearly are greatly improved.
  • Improved Confidence. With a more permanent and natural looking dental implant, you’ll feel more confident in both your smile and your oral health.

What Can I Expect if I Get a Dental Implant?

While each individual client will require a different treatment plan, the general steps of receiving a dental implant are as follows:

  • Installing the Titanium Root. Once it is determined that the jaw area in the missing tooth location is ideal for an implant, a small titanium post will be installed in the socket area where the tooth used to be. As the area heals, bone from the jaw will grow around the titanium post and fuse to it. This healing process can take up to 12 weeks.
  • Attaching the Abutment. After the titanium implant has adhered to the jaw, a small connector called an abutment will be attached to it.
  • Creating Your Crown. Next, a custom crown will be made to match and blend in with your existing teeth. Impressions will be taken to ensure an ideal fit. Once the crown is ready, it will be attached to the abutment. In some cases if the client prefers, the finishing crown can be made removable.

Local anesthesia can be used for certain parts of the procedure to ensure client comfort every step of the way.

After the dental implant procedure is completed, the area should be cared for just like the other teeth in terms of flossing, brushing and using antibacterial rinses as you usually do. Regular dental checkups will also allow your dentist in Sarasota FL Prestige Dental to ensure the surrounding teeth are healthy and secure so that you can enjoy optimal oral health for a lifetime.
